Your Words

My deepest thanks to you all. Your words were such a comfort, I can't begin to express how much they've meant to me. I've been blessed to live a long time without losing someone very close to me, so I had no idea how much even a small gesture of care could mean when you lose someone. I'm deeply grateful for all of you and your prayers and gentle support.

The week of funeral activities, taking care of my dad and meeting literally hundreds of grieving friends and family was harder than I imagined. I have a lot of peace about my mom's passing but being in the wake of the pain of so many others was intense. I found myself holding weeping people in my arms for days. After a long drive home from Maryland, I felt such a weariness that I couldn't think straight, hence my delay in writing to you. I'm much better today, but I'm taking everything slowly and giving myself space to grieve in my own time and in my own way.

Someday when I'm ready, I'll tell you some cool stuff about my mom, or maybe I'll write a story, but for now I just really want to say thank you from deep in my heart for your support and love. I'm not just saying made an enormous difference and it has meant the world the to me.

With Love and Deep Gratitude,
Fran Friel

The Agent 411 and My Unabashed Fave

In his article "Web Ways" in the Horror Writers Association's July newsletter, Jeff Ryan mentions a number of interesting blogs. He talks specifically about Neil Gaiman's of my personal faves.

Jeff Ryan writes:

"One of the most popular of genre writers, Neil Gaiman, shows that it's quite easy for him to be charming and deferential and interesting and British, all while staying in Wisconsin. Check out this great exchange with a literary agent for aspiring writers:
everything-you-wanted-to-know-about.asp. Voice to imagine reading his blog: David Thewlis."

The journal entry was made in January of 2005, but it's still pertinent. If you have a moment and you're at all interested in info about literary agents, you might want to have a read of this post in Neil's journal. Editor of Tor Books, Teresa Nielsen Hayden, gives her thoughts on agents and provides quite an array of resources to explore.

If you have no interest in the treacherous world of agents, but you haven't checked-out Neil's journal, it's worth a visit. There's always something interesting to peruse in Mr. Gaiman's wonderful world. He's a man who not only knows how to write a wicked tale, he's a master of the blog. Like I said, he's my more ways than one. *wink*

Garry Charles - UK's Fast Rising Star

Garry Charles had weathered the latest nightmare of transatlantic travel, when I met him at Horrorfind in Maryland this past August. Even after the madness of traveling from the UK on THE day that toothpaste was no longer allowed, Garry was great company and just a delight to get to know.

He talks about his HEAVEN'S FALLING series with AD John at the great Australian site, HorrorScope, and there they give us one of the most colorful and enjoyable interviews I've read to date.

Read the interview HERE!

And be sure to grab a copy of HEAVEN'S FALLING, VOL. 1 - available in the UK from Hadesgate Publications and in the US at The copies at Shocklines are signed by the great Garry himself. HEAVEN'S FALLING, VOL. 1 is a brilliant page-turner of a horror/fantasy read that you won't soon forget! Get!

And be sure to vist Garry at and at MySpace. Tell 'em, Fran sent ya'. *wink*

Thanks for reading!
